Just installed Adobe Acrobat on linux and it’s not printing? Just giving you a crappy error message when you try to print?
When you print, instead of selecting the default printer, just select “custom” and type “/usr/bin/lp” into the box that appears to the right. Printing will continue normally.
Just one more thing in the list of easy fixes that never make it into releases of Linux.

Just a little tip on how to get your familiar Windows XP “no logons” necessary behavior in Windows 7. Basically, you just type “control userpasswords2” into a command prompt, and uncheck the checkbox!
Heavy Time by C.J. Cherryh

God, I can’t get enough of CJ Cherryh’s world. This book follows the life of a group of miners who live their lives in the “Belt” here in our own solar system. The theme of “heavy time” — necessary time they must spend in 1g gravity aboard space stations in between mining runs (there’s no artificial gravity in this world) — is ongoing throughout the novel.
It’s a story set in the time before the Company/Union wars, when life was tough for those ruled by the Earth Company, and personal ships in the belt were largely at the mercy of directed “beams” of energy (caught by large sails) sent from mining station HQ’s. The people are hesitant about the future — they know the strength of the Union that lives in the “Beyond,” as they call it, and they live in constant fear of some great big rock being dropped into their system at relativistic speeds, aimed straight towards Earth.
Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan

Was a very good book — very good continuation of the last one that focused mainly on Rand (this one was all Mat and Perrin). Like I’m sure some others may feel, I felt that the final, glorious showdown between Mat and those that lived in the world of the Aelfin and Eelfin was a little… rushed. Still good, just rushed. I mean, we had been waiting for this showdown and the possible rescuing of Moraine for a long, long, long time (when did she disappear — the bloody 5th book?)
Juggler of Worlds by Larry Niven

Great book — I’ve got to read more of this series. It’s part of the "Ringworld" universe, but doesn’t deal with that story line directly. It’s a bit of a side-story dealing with, well, the dealings of the Puppeteer race and their dealings with humankind before the Ringworld was found. Great writing, great characters.
For The Win by Cory Doctorow

Honestly, this book is like "The Jungle" for our times, just it takes place in PC farms in Malaysia, India, and China. Interspaced a few times throughout the story of the characters are a few chapters about the economic principles of an increasingly multi-national world, written in a easy to understand fashion. The chapters that take place in China seem authentic with the current economic conditions there (low-educated workers streaming in from the countryside to be taken advantage of in the city-based factories).
The chapters in China with "Jie" (the pirate-broadcasting girl) — her introduction at all, really — seem a bit contrived, but hey: it’s a story. I’ll forgive it, and it helps move the book along.
I particularly liked the chapters dealing with the MMORPG "headquarters" — I can almost imagine a room like controlling World of Warcraft, subtly changing game mechanics and coefficients to keep players hooked.
Brother, I appreciate that you at least made an attempt at providing Linux installation files, even going so far as to provide .DEB and .RPM files.
However, none of the solutions works, and even on my version of Linux, Ubuntu 10.04, probably the most common one around, the .DEB files did next to nothing. They didn’t setup Ubuntu’s printer configuration so that the printer showed, nor did they enable the drivers to be found when I tried to install the printer manually. (The Brother HL-2270DW is apparently so new that Ubuntu doesn’t have any default drivers in its repositories.)
What did work? Selecting HL-2170W from the default drivers list in Ubuntu. Seems to work fine! :P
The Gathering Storm by Robert Jordan

Seriously — and I hate to say this — it was almost better than the last few books written by Jordan himself. :X
The amount of characters are kept to a minimum — the action is easy to follow, and you don’t feel yourself being overwhelmed by characters being introduced that you may have not read about in years. My only criticism — and it’s small — may be that perhaps some of the character interactions aren’t fleshed out enough… but no, I’m not going to go there. I’m happy with the way it’s written.
Rand, in particular, develops into an incredibly interesting character in this book — I personally thought his development had stagnated just a bit, and The Gathering Storm has certainly made up for that!
Just a few more that have been abandoned since the 4.0.1 patch:
Apparently, MapNotes is no more. Trying to find an addon that will import my many years of notes that I’ve made with this addon. (It’s seriously been one of the most helpful for questing with alts.)
I have a long history with this addon — for the longest time, I used it WAY back in the day, and then with the release of TBC, it stopped working. Thankfully, there was “Metamap,” which imported MapNotes map points just fine. (Metamap doesn’t even have a Curse page — I used to have to download it directly from the author’s website.)
However, it in turn stopped working with version 3.0 of WoW, but MapNotes came back with a fan update! (A fan update is where a fan of a defunct addon is able to get in contact with the original addon maintainer, and gets them to give them control over it.) But, now MapNotes no longer works anymore, either, and I’m stuck trying to find a replacement. Looking at HandyNotes for now — apparently there’s some way to get it to import MapNotes points.
Long live SellValue! I used this addon for the LONGEST time, and it was an absolute lifesaver.
Out questing and need to know if that stack of gray shit you’ve been collecting is worth it to keep? SellValue would tell you how much it was worth (dependent upon prices you had seen before). This addon worked for the longest time, even though it hadn’t been updated since forever.
Even though it was still working wit version 3.0, I started using an updated addon called “SellFish” — however, as you can see, WoW integrated this functionality into the core game with version 3.2, so there’s no need for either addon anymore!
AnnoyRP was a neat little plugin everyone started using back in my heavy guild-RP days (god, that sounds so dorky). It had amazing functionality — based upon certain events in the game that you set it to notice, i.e. mounting up, casting a certain spell, it would /s certain things.
For instance, you could set it to say “Hi Ho, Silver, Away!” every time you mounted up (or a certain random amount of times, or even a certain random choice out of a group of phrases). As you can imagine, it was LOADS of fun.
It stopped working some time ago, but the author made Chatterbox to make up for it. Did the same thing, worked great. However, now the author has left WoW (back in July over the whole RealID thing, which sadly enough didn’t even happen!), so who knows? It seems to work fine for now, but that could stop at any minute with version 4.0.2 of WoW.
Foundation and Earth by Isaac Asimov

I have to admit, the series got much better as it went along! I didn’t completely like the direction it took in this book (what happened to the Second Foundation? Would’ve liked to have seen a bit more of them), and the ending, though still good, was maybe a bit too "oh no! tune in next week!" for my tastes. But other than, a great ending to a great series!
Now to the final, last, prequel book.
